An Alabama 8th grader is a national finalist for Google’s 15th annual Doodle for Google contest. And her entry has a personal backstory.

Brooklyn Chandler is an 8th grader at Birmingham’s W.J. Christian K-8 School. She is one of 55 states and territory winners of the contest with her entry now moving on to the nationwide Doodle for Google voting competition at doodle4google.com. Voting at the site help determine who out of the 55 finalists will become one of the top give and, eventually, the overall national winner.

Chandler’s drawing was in response to Google’s prompt for the contest. Students were asked to use Google’s iconic logo to illustrate what they were most grateful for. Chandler’s entry was titled “Conspicuous Hair,” and she wrote of her design: “I am grateful for … my hair. I drew my hair because I believe my hair is a blessing, even though I’ve been ridiculed for it, and it’s been treated like a toy, I love my hair. The reason for my title is because, around my family, I’m always pointed out first because of my easily noticeable hair.”

The artwork that’s selected as a National Winner will be displayed on Google.com for one day, tentatively scheduled for June 6th. The winner will also receive a $30,000 college scholarship, a $50,000 technology package for their school/non-profit organization, plus Google hardware and swag.
